Places to visit in Charente

- Angoulême was the House of Valois’ possession ; Via Patrimoine organises guided tours and visits to discover the history and heritage of Angoulême. Today, Angoulême is renowned for its International Comics Festival which takes place in January : if you are a fan, you will follow the "painted walls tour" and visit the Comics Museum (CNBDI).

- Cognac is the home town of Francis Ist, King of France (1515-1547), and the capital city of cognac. You will visit the old town, the castle and the Art museum, but also the Cognac distilleries and the Cognac museum. You can also enjoy a short cruise on the Charente, aboard a "gabare", a traditional boat.

- La Rochefoucauld : the castle overlooks the valley and the village with its ancient houses. Still inhabited by the La Rochefoucauld family, it is partially open to the visit. Another place to visit in the village : the "Jardin Saint-Florent", a marvellous garden.

Heritage in Charente

- Romanesque art : the time when pilgrims used to travel across Charente on the road to Santiago de Compostela, has given Charente many romanesque churches, priories and abbeys :

  • St Amant de Boixe, Bassac and Nanteuil en Vallée’s abbeys
  • Angoulême’s cathedral and its carved façade
  • churches in Villejésus, Ligné, Ruffec, Courcôme, Empuré, La Rochette Lichères, Marcillac-Lanville, Nanclars, Ste Colombe...

- Villejésus was once the seat of a Templars’ monastery. After its destruction under the reign of Philip IV (Philip the Fair), the property was given to the Order of Malta’s Knights. In Ligné, the Knights’ graveyard contains 70 Temlars’ gravestones from the Cruisades times (12th and 13th centuries). The gravestones’carvings show religious crosses, standards, knights’ swords...

- Nanteuil en Vallée : from the Middle Ages, the village has kept wooden houses, the abbey’s square tower, St-Jean-Baptiste’s church (13th century).

- Tusson is a listed and protected village. Marguerite d’Angoulême, sister of Francis Ist, spent several years in Tusson : this was a time of splendor for the village. You can visit : the museum and the medieval garden.

- Verteuil sur Charente : The family La Rochefoucauld once owned its castle : Francis 1st, Charles Quint, Louis XIIIth, and Marie de Médicis were visitors. Sitting at the foot of the castle, the village shows beautiful medieval houses with carved doors.

- Bayers Castle has kept part of its 12th century keep. Its owners, a branch of the La Rochefoucauld family, rebuilt it in the 15th century. Recent works have restored its splendor. It is open to the visit in July and August.

- Les Bouchauds’ theater : located in St Cybardeaux, this gallo-roman theater is the largest in Aquitaine region. You can take a guided tour or visit the theater on your own.

You must also visit...

- Les Jardins du Ruffecois : in the area around Ruffec, you can find many gardens and parks to visit : in Echoisy, Mansle, Montjean, Nanteuil en Vallée, St Fraigne et Tusson.

- Le Moulin des Pierres Blanches (Villefagnan) : visit this restored windmill, and learn everything about mills in the 19th century and how it works. You can also visit the restored miller’s house.

During your stay in Charente, you must absolutely taste the local specialties !

- On the market, you will buy the local cheese "le Manslois", made either of goat’s milk or cow’s milk. It is still made in the traditional way.
